Team performance is critical for the success of any small business. Your team significantly contributes to your company’s success, but often faces challenges in becoming the most productive version of itself. Let’s explore some common obstacles and how to overcome them.

Lack of Clear Goals and Objectives
One major obstacle is the lack of clear goals and objectives. Without clear direction, team members often lack motivation and focus, leading to confusion and inefficiency.
Solution: Set objectives and goals. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel here; use an existing system to guide you. My personal choice is OKRs (Objectives and Key Results). Give OKRs a Google or check out this book for more insights.
Poor Communication
Effective communication is often underestimated in terms of its difficulty. It requires practice to become a truly effective communicator. Without improving this skill for yourself and your team, misunderstandings, errors, and a lack of coordination will persist.
Solution: Establish reliable communication channels using tools like Slack or Microsoft Teams. Build a culture that values soft skills. Encourage open communication by creating an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas, concerns, and feedback.
Lack of Trust and Collaboration
A lack of trust and collaboration can create a toxic work environment, affecting morale and productivity. This issue can manifest in various ways, such as doubts about work quality or ineffective communication.
Solution: Build a collaborative environment by promoting teamwork and recognizing collaborative efforts. Avoid long periods of people working in silos and try rotating teams.
Unclear Roles and Responsibilities
When roles and responsibilities are not clearly defined, team members product errors, get burnt out, are often confused, and quality of work drops.
Solution: Clearly define roles and responsibilities. For more details read our post Benefits of Clearly Defining Team Responsibilities article
Inadequate Resources and Tools
Another common issue is teams not having the necessary tools to do their best work, often due to poor communication about their needs.
Solution: Regularly assess the team’s needs in terms of tools, technology, and other resources. Invest in the necessary tools and technology that can help your team perform their tasks more effectively.
Lack of Recognition and Reward
A very common one here and something that not only hits performance but can decline morale quicker than anything else. When people feel their efforts are not recognised or rewarded, their motivation and performance can suffer.
One extra note here is be careful with overdoing recognition too. If you celebrate everything and even false success, it deminishes those times where recognition is truly deserved.
Solution: Effectively acknowledge good work, highlighting teams and/or individuals when they deserve it. Introduce a reward system such as bonuses, promotions, or other incentives within the means of your business.
